幸せが感じられるのは
人が持続的な幸せ感を持つためには、
１）物質的な豊かさと利便性に恵まれていること
２）健康であること
３）人間関係に恵まれていること
４）自然を含めて自分を取り囲む環境が快適であること
等が、或る程度、確保されていなければならない。
だが、当然のことながら、ここで言う「或る程度」は人其々であり、「その或る程度」を確保できなければ、人は幸せを感じることができない。
人並み以上のレベルで上記１）２）３）４）を確保していても、自分の期待する程度がそれよりずっと高ければ、その人は、幸せどころか、苦しみと不満の毎日を過ごすことになる。
お釈迦様は、「欲望を捨てろ」と言う。欲望が苦の源であることを見抜いているからだ。
ここまで悟りを開くのは、普通の現代人には無理があるので、これを多少歪めて翻訳すれば、「自分の人生に対する期待度を低減せよ」ということになる。
人が持続的な幸せ感を持つためには、自分が既に確保している１）２）３）４）のレベルまでこれらに対する期待の程度を下げるか、自分が期待している程度まで１）２）３）４）を確保しなければならない。
どちらも、其々、異なる意味で難しい。
だが、昔の人と比べれば、現代人は多くの１）を確保しているのに、昔の人以上に貪欲に１）を欲しがっている。この点については、お釈迦様の言うことに耳を傾けなければならない。
３）４）については、１）を欲しがるあまり、昔の人が確保していたレベル以下に落ち込んでいる人が多い。２）についても、心の面まで考慮した場合、昔の人以下かも知れない。
筆者は、多くの老人から「歳を取ってからの方が幸せを感じられる」という話をよく聞かされてきた。自分が年寄りの仲間入りをして、この話の意味がよく分かるようになった。人は、健全に歳を取ると、自然の摂理によって、自分の人生に対する期待度が低減するようになっている。
