私がまだ十代の頃、我が家に後ろ足の悪い一匹の猫がいた。ある日の夕方、学校へ行くため急いでいた私の足元にニャンコが走り寄り、ズボンのすそを加え、しきりに何度も呼び戻そうとする。私も急いでいたので、心残りだが、なだめすかし、その場を離れた。
学校への道々、「何？」と思いながらも授業へ（動物の勘で危険を察知？　私の身に何かが？）。
学校が終わり無事家へ帰りつくと、長兄が出迎えてくれ、「さっきお産婆さんをしたぞ、五つの新しい命を取り上げた」と言った。
そこで、私はさっきのニャンコの行動が理解できた。
ニャンコは「生まれそうだから手伝って」と私を引き留めたのだ。
相手のことを思いやる（言葉は通じないが）気持ちが足りなかったかな。
