不動明王の怒りと観音の悲しみ

　怒りについて話そう。「自分の立場しか視野に入らず、人間を怒りの対象として、破壊しようとするもの」と「他者の立場にも立ち、不公正や不公平を含めて悪を怒りの対象とし、それを破壊しようとするもの」の二つがある。
  後者の怒りを「不動明王の怒り」と呼ぶ。両者の違いを見分けるのは、極めて簡単である。前者は、人間に対する怒りであるから、自分自身の心身も破壊する。嫌な後味が残る。いつも怒っていると、自分自身の胃腸や十二指腸が破壊される。後者の怒りは、悪に対する怒りであり、嫌な後味はない。自我の拡大を伴う大きな愛の感情に支えられて晴れやかな安定感が残る。悪を実行した人間に対しても、愛の感情を注いでいるのである。罪を憎んで人を憎まず、悪を破壊し人を労わる。

  悲しみについても、同じことが言える。「自分のことだけの悲しみ」と「その自分の悲しみを乗り越えて悟った他者の悲しみ、即ち、他者の立場に立った悲しみ」の二つがある。 後者の悲しみを「観音の悲しみ」と言う。自我の拡大を伴う大きな愛の感情の中に同情や共感がある。
