長幼の序

　お祖父さん・お父さん・お兄さん・僕の順序、お祖母さん・お母さん・お姉さん・私の順序は、人間がまだ猿だった頃から、とても大切なものだった。隣の小父さんも、学校の先輩も、年少の僕にとっては、目上の人だ。昔の人は、人が社会で幸せに暮らすための知恵として、この感情・感覚から生まれる秩序を「長幼の序」と言って、大切にしてきたのである。

　誤解を避けるために付け加えると、民主主義の世の中では、「長幼の序」は、人間の価値順位に繋がるものでもなければ、命令を下すための権利順位に繋がるものでもない。この意味では、当然のことながら、年長者、年少者、共に、皆、平等である。だが、「年少者が年長者に敬意を払うことを知らない社会が平等な社会だ」と考えるのは大きな間違いである。

　「長幼の序」が示す意味・価値（或る種の感情・感覚が支える）を文化として共有すれば、社会は、この領域に於いて、混沌から秩序に向かうことができる。この点が重要なのだ。親と子が友達の関係にあれば、社会は混乱する。親が子を、子として意味・価値付けできなければ、子は全うに育たないし、子が親を、親として意味・価値付けできなければ、子は全うに育たないのである。

　平等ということを考える上で、「差別」と「区別」は異なったものである。所謂、「差別」が不平等を生む源泉であると定義すれば、「区別」は平等な社会にも必要なものとして定義できる。男女の区別、役割の区別などを考えれば、直ぐに分かる。男性が子供を産めないから不平等だという人はいないし、学校の先生が生徒を教育するのは不平等だという人もいない。

　「長幼」には、自然が人間に与える役割の区別がある。
