　我々は子供の頃、「一生懸命やって、学業成績を上げろ、運動会で一等賞を取れ」などと言われた。それで、頑張って競争し勝ってみたら、今度は、「協調精神が足りない」などと注意される。人間は、レイモンド・チャンドラーの小説で探偵フィリップ・マーロウが言ったように、「強くなければ生きていけない、優しくなければ生きている資格がない」のかも知れない。

　切磋琢磨し競争しなければ、個人としても社会としても、進歩・向上がない。だから、競争は必要である。しかし、協調がなければ、その進歩や向上は、個的なものにとどまり、社会的な相乗効果が期待できないばかりか、社会的な累積も難しい。さらに、秩序は失われ、競争は激化し、争いが蔓延し、少数の勝者のみが生き残る。結果として社会は衰退する。

　我々は、自分を狙う犯罪者に優しくするのは難しいが、相撲で勝負した相手には、侮蔑ではなく礼を持って接する方が良い。山の柿の実は、自分たちが食べる分だけ取ったなら、後は、鳥のために残す気配りが必要である。

　時代や環境、自分の周囲の状況によって、刻々と微妙に変化する競争と協調の一見矛盾する均衡点を瞬時に適格に探り当てるバランス感覚は、人間にとって極めて重要な能力である。これは、学校の授業で教えてくれるものではない。先天的な差異はあるが、子供の頃に自然の中で遊び、友達や兄弟と小競り合いをして、無意識の内に身に付けるものである。

　歳を取って振り返ると、次のようなことも言える。子供の頃や若い頃は、視野狭小で、勝つために、がむしゃらに競争した。結果として、強さと能力に磨きは掛かるが、それと共に、相手の気持ちも分かるようになる。自分の痛みは相手にもある。歳を取るに連れ、自我意識は拡大し、協調の精神が自発的に生まれて来る。
