「物質は、なぜ存在しているのか、物質には、なぜそのような力が備わっているのか」を、科学は解明することができない。科学的手法の対象域外の話であるからだ。この厳然たる事実を謙虚に理解した上で、科学的手法の対象域に話を移して、現在の分子生物学・分子工学を覗いてみよう。

最先端の分子工学は、高分子（高分子量化合物、多くは鎖状、網状のものもある）を切断し接着して、今までにない部分同士の組み合わせを作り、全く新しい形態・構造・機能・性質を持つ物質を作り出すところまで来ている。分子生物学を含めたこの分野では、今後、人工知能とその周辺技術の進化・発展により、更なる高分子の合成法則の発見が、急速に進展する。近い将来、例えば、蛋白質などを使って、一定の条件下で、一定の原因を投下することにより、人間の意図した方向に向かって（高分子の自律的な合成法則を利用して）、高度で複雑な形態・構造・機能・性質を作り出すことが可能になるのだ。これを応用すれば、産業面から見ても、驚くべき革命的な製造方法が社会にもたらされる。
視野を広げて見渡せば、今まで科学の目が届かなかった生物・高分子・自然環境の分野で、様々な仕組みや法則が、相次いで、発見・解明されているのである。

分子生物学の専門家によれば、あらゆる生物は、共通して、８種類の核酸（４種類のDNAと４種類のRNA）と２０種類のアミノ酸を主要素材として出来ているとのことである。この僅かな数の主要素材の組み合わせ・配列で、多種多様な生物が出来上がっているというのは、驚きであり、偉大なる知的設計者の存在を垣間見る思いがする。
筆者は、常々、トンボの方が飛行機よりも遥かに優れたメカニズムを持っていると言ってきたのだが、生命エネルギーの存在を度外視すれば、やがて、人類は、トンボのような柔らかくエネルギー効率の高い空飛ぶ乗り物を手にすることができるかも知れない。
生物は、DNAに記録された遺伝情報の一部を、RNAの塩基配列に転写し、更に、それをアミノ酸の配列に変換し蛋白質を合成する。この２段階のプロセスは全ての生物に共通する。これらは、分子生物学が明らかにするところのものだが、なぜ、そのような力がこの自然宇宙に存在するのかについては、繰り返すが、科学では解明できない。根本的な力そのものは解明できなくとも、物理法則と同様に、このプロセスを支配する法則を発見して、それをこの世で応用することはできる。それが、科学と技術である。
今のところ、DNA構造体の加工程度に止まってはいるが、やがて、更なる合成法則の発見と人工知能による分子設計の高度化によって、複雑な蛋白質のアミノ酸配列を加工するところまで、この科学技術は進展する。具体的には、分子モーター、分子センサー、分子シグナル変換・増幅装置、分子コンピュータなどが開発・実用化され、動く人工細胞で出来たロボットが出現する。分子ロボティクスが脚光を浴びる時代がやって来るのである。但し、「人類が、その前に、自滅しなければ」の話である。

ここで、これらと生命の関係を考えてみよう。以前には、「生体内での蛋白質の高度で複雑な形態・構造・機能・性質は、生命現象そのものである」という説があった。だが、事実は、創造主由来の生命エネルギーが、これらの底を流れ、これらを支える根本的な力になってはいるのだが、「これらは、合成法則を含めた化学法則の下に自律的に作動している」ということが明らかになったのである。「物質・物質エネルギー・時空間とそれらの形態・構造・機能・性質は、それらの底を流れる創造主由来の意志・創造エネルギーで支えられている、そして、それらは、因果関係・物理法則の下に自律的に作動している」のと全く同様である。
これで、生命現象は、全て解明されたということにはならないし、生命そのものの根本については、何も分かっていないということに変わりはない。

なぜ宇宙は存在し、なぜ物質は存在し、なぜ人間は存在し、なぜ物理法則はそのような力を持ち、なぜ化学法則はそのような力を持つのか。生命とは何か。これらの謎は、全て、創造主由来の生命・意志・創造を司る非物質エネルギーと関係がある。残念ながら、これらは、科学の対象領域を超えている。現進化段階の人類にとっては、「主観的・直感的な仮説を立て、それに沿って、謙虚に科学的な手法を応用していく、仮説全体の中で論理的な矛盾が生じていないかのチェックをする、仮説は人類を幸せに導くものなのかを考える」等の便宜的方法を取る以外に、その探求の道は存在しないのである。

人類の幸せという言葉が出たついでに、倫理との関係も考えてみよう。「心に湧き上がる倫理感情が正しいものであるのかどうか」という問いに対する答えも、科学の対象領域を超えている。優れた分子工学の専門家が倫理的に優れているとは限らない。優れた物理の専門家が原子爆弾を生み出したのと同様の事態は生じ得る。この点も、しっかりと認識する必要がある。
一方、この分野の進展は、筆者が、常々、悩んでいる難解な倫理問題の解決策を提示してくれるかも知れない。その問題は、動物としての人類が従属栄養に頼らざるを得ないという事実から始まる。全ての動物、クロロフィル（葉緑体に含まれる緑色色素で、光合成で中心的な役割をする）を持たない植物、多くの細菌は、無機物から有機物を合成する植物（光合成で独立栄養を営む）を栄養にしなければ生きていけないという厳然たる事実が存在する。ましてや、食物連鎖の頂点にある人類は、他の多くの動物を殺して栄養源としているのだ。だから、「愛は、他の生物に、どこまで与えるべきなのか」という倫理的な疑問が、筆者の心に湧き上がるのだ。笑い事ではない。上述の通り、自然の法則により、愛の全面適用は不可能である。基本的には、自然の法則に逆らうべきでないことも十分承知しているが、自由意志を駆使した人類の進化による超越は、創造主の望むところである。「四つ足を食べるのはやめようよ、鳥もやめよう、では、魚は？野菜は？」、笑い話になりそうな悩みである。この悩みが、命のない高栄養で美味な蛋白質が製造できるのであれば、一挙に解決できるではないか。「もう、可哀想な豚の断末魔の叫びや牛の涙を想像しなくてもよい」と思えば、明るい未来がやって来そうな気分になる。
