自我意識とは何であろうか。意志、知覚、思考、記憶、感情、決断、行為などを自己同一的な主体として遂行し、これらを他者や外界から区別して意識するものである。幼児期には他者や外界から自己を区別して意識するものは、ぼんやりとした状態だったが、思春期に入るとはっきりした状態を呈する。
この「はっきり区別する状態」は、進化の過程（動物にもぼんやりした自我意識があり、特に、生存本能や繁殖に関してその強度は人間以上のものもある）で絶対に必要なものなのだが、これには多少の矛盾がある。なぜなら、我々の心はあの世に存在し、自然宇宙を構成する部分として他者や外界と繋がっているからである。一方、我々は、一個の自我として、創造主から分け与えられた（一つの独立した）自由意志（「自由意志と本能」の項を参照のこと）を駆使して、自然宇宙の創造に参加するよう運命付けられている。これが、他者や外界から自己をはっきりと区別する自我意識の生み出された所以である。
この状態は、人類に、「進化の道を辿るコース」と「絶滅に向かうコース」の二つを用意している。人類、更に言えば、一般民衆の総和としての自由意志が、このコースを選択する。どういうことか。
自他をはっきりと区別する自我意識は、他者や外界との対立を勝利し、強者となることを望む。これは、進化するという点では好ましい側面を持つ。だが、行き過ぎて他者や外界を徹底的に破壊すると、それは自己破壊に繋がる。なぜなら、破壊した他者や外界は、あの世で自己の基盤と繋がっているからである。
「善と悪」という人間にとっての永遠のテーマも、ここに関係する。自他を区別する意識が行き過ぎて、他者や外界を痛め、破壊し、挙句の果てに、自己を含めて関連するあらゆる生命を破滅に導くエネルギー、これを、筆者は、悪と呼んでいる。そして、悪があり、その対立概念として善がある（逆も可）のだが、根源的な善は悪を内包していると考えた方が自然の摂理に適っているように思える。弱肉強食（知恵の木の実を食べて生まれた、進化を促進する側面も併せ持つ、目先の悪は、回り回って根源的な善に辿り着く）のこの世を肯定し、人間以上に進化した生命には、「愛と自我意識の拡大」を勧める筆者の宇宙観である。別の言い方をすれば、悪魔も自己肯定をする限り、善神に内包されているのだ。
ここで「愛と自我意識の拡大」の話に移ろう。
前述の通り、人間は、自然宇宙の中であらゆるものと繋がっている。それにも拘わらず、はっきりと自他を区別する自我意識を持つ存在に進化した。この矛盾を補うため、ここまで進化した自我意識には、「絶妙な紐付け」（「紐付け」については「心は鏡」の項を参照のこと）が、先天的に施されている。愛という偉大な感情との「限定的な紐付け」である。愛は、この分離された状態の自我意識を拡大させ、他者や外界との一体感を生み出す「善のエネルギー」である。だが、この先天的な「紐付け」は、その愛の対象範囲、強度、持続性に関して、極めて限定的な形を取っている。この点に於いて、超知的設計創造者（創造主）の絶妙さを感じざるを得ない。人類が「進化の道を辿るコース」を選択するためには、先天的な「紐付け」に加えて、更なる後天的な「紐付け」、即ち、個々人の自由意志を起因とした「愛と自我意識の拡大」を志向する強い「紐付け」が必要になってくる。なんと、自然宇宙には、このような仕掛けが存在しているのだ。この後天的な「紐付け」は、個々人の進化に止まることなく、多くの人々の意志エネルギーを同方向に集積させることによって（筆者が仮説する集団記憶感情伝達、本能形成、創造循環という自然宇宙の仕組みが動き出す・・・詳細については「集合記憶感情伝達」「この世に一番近いあの世の領域・その１」の項を参照のこと）、人類の本能となるところまで到達しなければならない。これによって、人類は、愛の感情面で進化を遂げ、更なる持続的な繁栄に向かうことが可能となるのである。
ここで、原論を離れて、分かり易い愛の具体例を挙げてみよう。
母と乳飲み子の間には、通常、自我意識の拡大が生じている。先天的な強い紐付け（この関係に限定すれば、既に、本能と言えるものが存在する）により、母の心には乳飲み子に対する愛、乳飲み子の心には母に対する愛が形作られている。母と乳飲み子の心は、一体化し、両者を仕切るものはなく、安心感と安定感で満たされ、その状態は持続している。誰もが、「母は偉大なり」と感じるものだ。それは、この愛の感情に流れる意味と価値によるものである。
愛は、母子愛に限らず、色々な形で存在する。純粋で持続的なものもあれば、他の感情が混在して一時的なものもある。
愛の感情は、どのような心の状態で、湧き上がるのだろうか。
愛の感情が向かう対象を相手という言葉で表現すれば、「相手を自分と同じくらいよく知っていること」、「相手との間に積み重なる共同体験があること」、「共に親しみを感じていること」、「相手と同じ目標を持っていること」、「相手に対し感情移入が生じていること」、「相手との一体感が生じていること」などが考えられる。
人間は、誰でも、見知らぬものに対しては、本能的な脅威を覚える。この意味での脅威とは正反対のものがベースとなって、愛の感情は、心に湧き上がるのだ。こうして、家族愛、友人愛、隣人愛、同胞愛などが生まれてくる。
恋愛感情やファン心理は、未知に対する憧れから、外見など表面的なものが生み出すイメージ・虚像を起因とするものが多い。これらは、愛という点で同質部分を含むものの、筆者がここで言う愛の感情とは、総体で見れば、起因の違いでも明らかなように、多くの点で異なる。
愛の感情が純粋であるならば、自我意識はその愛の対象である相手まで拡大し、愛する心の中で、両者を隔てる意味と価値を伴う感情の壁は消滅する（逆に、自他を区別する理性的な意識は覚醒度を上げている）。この状態にあれば、孔子の言う「己の欲せざるところ、人に施すことなかれ」は、自発的に実現する。相手の喜びは自分の喜び、相手の悲しみは自分の悲しみになるからだ。別の見方をすれば、「そこには、お金に換えられない意味と価値が存在している」と言うこともできる。
愛の感情は、向けられる対象に変化がなくても、永続するとは限らない。機会ある毎に、繰り返し、繰り返し、この世に具現化した形ある多くの愛を心に湧き上がらせることで、心の潜在領域に、それらの愛との「強い紐付け」を作り上げなければならない。誰からの強制でもない。自らの自由意志を駆使して、そうするのだ。愛は自発的でなければ、愛ではない。これによって、より純粋で持続的な愛の感情を後天的に自分のものにすることができる。純粋で持続的な愛の感情に満たされた心は、「自我意識が拡大している」ことを示している。
そして、このような個々の自由意志を起因とする「自我意識の拡大」を、より多くの人々が志向するようになれば、やがて、人類は、全体として、愛の感情面で、進化することになるのである。
一方、科学技術の急速な進歩により、この世に大きな変化を生み出す力を持ってしまった人類は、バランス上、愛に関して、もっと多くのことを知る必要に迫られている。この意味から、愛の持つパワーについても、簡単に触れておこう。
トラブル・メーカーや一見悪意のありそうな人間に対しても、心を開き、愛の感情を持てる人がいる。そうすることで、心に生じる恐れ、不安、憎悪、憤りは消滅し、勇気や希望が湧いて、トラブル解決のための知恵が働き始める。又、多くの友人に恵まれ、その友人たちを家族同様に遇する人がいる。このような人は、人間のスケールが大きいばかりでなく、他者からの支援に恵まれ、多くの面で成功し、幸せな生涯を送る。自我意識が拡大した心には、勇気、希望、喜びが漲り、他者や外界との一体感や安定感が生み出されているのだ。
区別した他者や外界との対立を自己のパワーを上げて克服するだけでは、やがて限界に達する。場合によっては、自己破滅に至ることもある。愛の持つパワーを自己のものにすれば、この両パワーを現実的で理想的なバランスを取りながら行使することが可能になるのである。
最後に「愛と自我意識の拡大」の意味・内容をより明確にするため、混同されることのある「自我意識の希薄化」と比較し、その違いを指摘しておきたい。
「自我意識の希薄化」とは、膨大なエネルギーを持つ集合感情に埋没して、幼児期のぼんやりした状態にまで、自他を区別する理性的な意識が退歩することである。一時的なものではあるが、自我意識が関連する集合意識に溶け込んで、その集合感情と一体化する時などに生じる。サッカーの試合などに見られるサポーターの熱狂的な応援、コンサート会場でのファンの興奮の渦などを想起すれば分かり易い。これらの感情エネルギーの量は凄まじい。個人にとって、大きな感情体験である。このため、その強力なパワーと安定感に、すっかり、魅了されて、自他を区別する理性的な意識は、幼児期の混沌の中に埋没してしまう。この時、確かに、集合感情との一体化も生じていて、自他を隔てる意味と価値を伴う感情の壁も消滅している。だが、これは、「自我意識の拡大」ではない。「自我意識の拡大」では、自他を区別する理性的な意識の更なる覚醒があるからこそ自己と他者や外界の一体化を実感するのであり、これによって、自他を隔てる意味と価値を伴う感情の壁が消滅しているのである。
