一方、潜在領域に入った刺激は、あの世に存在するその生命体の原型との間に出来上がっている紐付けに従って、反射的に（例えば、本能）、自律的に、この世での反応を引き起こす。

ここで注目したいことは、自我意識が経験する意味と価値についてである。＜堀込清一の【宇宙と心】＞の＜価値は何にあるのか＞でも説明した通り、自我意識にとっての価値は、あの世からダウンロードされるものの中にある。意味も同じだ。この世に存在するものの中には、決してない。これが意味することは、「この世に存在するものは、あの世に存在している本質の象徴となっている」ということだ。美術、音楽、文学、デザイン、演劇など、あらゆる芸術に秘められた力は、この世に象徴を創作し、それを見る人の心に「あの世にある、その本質、その意味と価値」を、引き込むことから生じるのである。
面白い話を聞いたことがある。或る達人は、毛筆の文字に現れる或る動きと日本舞踊の或る動作からの流れに、同じものを感じると言う。あの世にある一つの本質が、この世にある二つの別々のものから顔を出している例だ。人の顔付き、動作、姿勢、話し方、話の内容、声の質、等々、これらの中にもあの世にある本質が、無意識的にその姿を現す。
だが、この世にある象徴は、それと直結するあの世の本質との間にずれが生じることも多い。「時間差によるずれ」、「象徴が本質の一部のみを現している場合の全体とのずれ」などが考えられる。例えば、悪女の美顔について考えてみよう。美顔そのものは、間違いなく一つの美の本質の象徴であるが、その顔を持つ悪女の心根までは現していないということだ。一方、無意識的に現れるその場その場の表情や仕草には、心根をその時点で的確に象徴するものが現れている。
因みに、美男美女を追い求めること、それ自体は決して悪いことではないが、それよりも大切なものは心の美しさである。若い頃から、美顔が必ずしも美しい心を象徴しているとは限らないことに気付いていれば、より良い伴侶を得る確率は高まるのである。
